Jan Linzel was a Dutch military officer and Englander born on August 18, 1918, in Zaandam. He was the son of Herman Linzel, who was the director of a steam sawmill factory, De Vries & Co, in Zaandam, which later produced confectionery. Linzel's experiences during World War II as a ' Engelandvaarder', a term for Dutch refugees who left for Britain to fight against the Nazis, marked his contributions to history. He passed away on February 6, 2009, in Voorburg.
