Johannes Bernardus (Jan) Kip was a Dutch sculptor born on April 7, 1926, in Oldenzaal. He trained around 1950 at the art academy in Enschede, under Henk Zweerus. Kip specialized in bronze casting and became well-known in and around Oldenzaal for his sculpture 'Boeskoolmenneke,' unveiled on May 10, 1967, which became a symbol of the city. The term 'Boeskool' refers to white cabbage, a vegetable for which Oldenzaal was historically known. He created numerous other works, primarily figurative representations, many of which are displayed in public spaces.
