Jan Junga was a Czech student born on March 7, 1936, in Frýdek-Místek. In December 1954, while attempting to escape from Czechoslovakia to Austria, he stepped on a landmine at the state border near Novosedly. The explosion severely injured him, resulting in the loss of part of his leg, and he succumbed to his injuries the following day in a hospital. His death highlighted the dangers of attempting to cross the Iron Curtain, and no one was ever punished for his death.
