Jan Houtman was a Dutch resistance fighter born in 1917 in Hoonhorst. He was involved in the Landelijke Knokploegen resistance group during the German occupation in World War II. Houtman was shot and killed by the Dutch SS officer Herbertus Bikker while attempting to transport weapons dropped by the English for the resistance. His murder gained notoriety due to a 2003 trial reopened against Bikker, who had previously fled to West Germany after his conviction. The circumstances of Houtman's death were revealed through witness testimonies, emphasizing the brutal nature of his assassination.
