Jan Campert was a Dutch journalist, poet, and writer, born on August 15, 1902, in Spijkenisse. He is best known for his poem 'De achttien dooden,' which he wrote in response to the execution of fifteen members of the resistance group known as the Geuzen, along with three communist February strikers, on March 13, 1941. Campert's work reflects his engagement with pressing social issues during a tumultuous time in history, and he sadly passed away in the Neuengamme concentration camp in Germany on January 12, 1943.
