Jan Erik Almlöf was a Swedish theoretical chemist known for his contributions to quantum chemistry. He studied at Uppsala University, earning his candidate degree in 1967, a licentiate in 1971, and a doctorate in 1974. He worked with IBM's Almaden Research Center and held professorships at the University of Oslo and the University of Minnesota. Almlöf introduced direct methods in quantum chemistry and developed the MOLECULE program for calculating molecular structures. He is notable for promoting the European Summer School in Quantum Chemistry and received the Schrödinger Medal in 1993.
