James Walter Christy is an American astronomer born in 1938, best known for his discovery of Pluto's moon, Charon, in 1978 while working at the US Navy Observatory. He noticed a notable elongation on one side of a photographic image of Pluto, which led him to conclude that it was indeed a moon after analyzing archive images dating back to 1965. His findings were confirmed by calculating Charon's orbit, and subsequent predicted eclipses were observed. In 2008, asteroid 129564 Christy was named in his honor.
