James P. Kennett is an American paleoceanographer known for his influential work in the field. He earned his PhD from Victoria University of Wellington, focusing on the Kapitean Stage in New Zealand. In 1986, he became the founding editor of the scientific journal Paleoceanography. Kennett is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and cofounder of the Comet Research Group. His research includes the controversial Younger Dryas impact hypothesis, suggesting cometary impacts affected the Clovis culture, and he contributed to research regarding the ancient city of Sodom's destruction.
