James Mattis is a retired American general and former U.S. Secretary of Defense, serving from January 20, 2017, until his resignation on December 20, 2018. He retired from the U.S. Marine Corps in 2013 with the rank of four-star general and previously led U.S. Central Command from 2010 to 2013. Mattis played a significant role in the Iraq War, notably commanding the Battle of Fallujah in 2004 and participating in the Afghanistan War. He was nominated by President Donald Trump, receiving a special Senate waiver to take the position.
