James Gilchrist (1919-2004) was an Australian tennis player known for his strong serve and powerful forehand, though he had a weaker backhand which he sought to improve. He peaked as a player just before World War II and resumed his career after serving in the war. Gilchrist had several tournament wins but often fell short at the Australian Championships against top players Bromwich and Quist. His notable performances included reaching the quarter-finals in 1939 and competing in multiple Grand Slam events throughout the late 1930s and early 1950s.
