James F. Drake is an American physicist specializing in plasma physics. He obtained his bachelor's degree from UCLA in 1969 and earned his PhD in 1975. Since 1987, he has been a professor at the University of Maryland. Drake is known for his work on laser-plasma interactions and plasma turbulence, particularly for explaining the rapid reconnection of magnetic field lines and resulting particle accelerations in astrophysical plasmas, such as on the Sun. He received the James Clerk Maxwell Prize in 2010 and was elected a Fellow of the American Physical Society in 1986.
