James A. Estes is an American ecologist known for his contributions to marine ecology, particularly concerning sea otters and kelp forest dynamics. He serves as a Distinguished Professor at the University of California, Santa Cruz. Estes obtained his Ph.D. in biology and statistics in 1974 and has worked extensively with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and U.S. Geological Survey. His research emphasizes the ecological roles of large predators and he has published several influential books and co-edited works on community ecology and ocean ecosystems. His work is featured in the documentary 'The Serengeti Rules'.
