Jacques Cousteau (1910–1997) was a French explorer renowned for his documentaries on marine life. He also contributed to the development of the scuba diving apparatus. In France, he was known as le commandant Cousteau, while internationally he was recognized as Jacques Cousteau or Captain Cousteau. He was honored as a Commander of the Legion of Honor and received the Grand Croix of the National Order of Merit.
