Jácome Martins Baggi de Araujo was the first known Esperantist in Brazil and a prominent judge in Petropolis, Rio de Janeiro. He learned about Esperanto in 1896 and became an active participant by 1897. Baggi corresponded with other Esperantists and contributed to the Esperanto community by promoting the language and its literature. He was the founder and president of the Petropolis Esperanto Group, and despite retiring due to illness in 1906, he remained an active advocate for Esperanto until his death in 1912, alongside his daughter Irani.
