Jack Lester King (1934-1983) was an American evolutionary biologist celebrated for his co-authorship of the influential paper 'Non-Darwinian Evolution' with Thomas H. Jukes, which argued that many molecular mutations are neutral rather than driven by natural selection. He earned his Ph.D. at UC Berkeley and served there as a postdoctoral fellow before becoming a professor at UC Santa Barbara. King's work provoked significant debate in evolutionary biology and focused on neutral substitutions. He passed away unexpectedly in 1983, survived by two children and six others from his first marriage.
