J. Ezra Merkin is an American investor, hedge fund manager, and philanthropist born on April 19, 1953. He managed a group of hedge funds known as Gabriel Capital LP until it became insolvent in 2008 due to significant investments in Bernard Madoff's Ponzi scheme. Despite extensive fallout and lawsuits, he was not found guilty of fraud or knowledge of the scheme, but he agreed to repay fees associated with Madoff's investments. Following the scandal, he resigned from several positions, including as non-executive chairman of GMAC.
