He earned a Ph.D. in Science from the University of Tokyo in 1961, with a thesis focusing on the Jurassic stratigraphy in Japan, particularly concerning the Gotlandian faunas. Additionally, Hayami served as a professor at the University of Tokyo, where he was honored as an emeritus professor. He passed away on May 27, 2013.
