István Arató was a Hungarian composer born on February 9, 1910, in Zagreb and died on March 8, 1980, in Leimbach, Switzerland. He studied under Zoltán Kodály and worked in Berlin and Zurich. He emigrated to Switzerland during World War II and traveled extensively. From 1965 to 1966, he directed the conservatory in Algiers, later settling in Zurich where he founded the improvisational ensemble Inspirati and taught at the Kunstgewerbeschule. His works focus on improvisation and feature elements of aleatoric music.
