Isaias Afwerki, born on February 2, 1946, is the first and current president of Eritrea, holding office since the country's independence in 1993. He led the Eritrean People's Liberation Front (EPLF) to victory in May 1991, ending a thirty-year war for independence. Afwerki is also the leader of Eritrea's only legal political party, the People's Front for Democracy and Justice (PFDJ). He has faced criticism from the United Nations and Amnesty International for human rights violations. In 2015, Eritrea was ranked at the bottom of the press freedom index for the eighth consecutive year under his leadership.
