He earned his degree in civil engineering in 1957 from the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm and later an economics degree in 1984 from Stockholm University. Carlsson held various engineering and leadership roles in the Swedish defense sector, including significant positions at the Swedish Defense Material Administration. In 1983, he became a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of War Sciences.
