He served as the Prime Minister of Kazakhstan from January 2002 to June 2003, after which he was succeeded by Deputy Prime Minister Daniyal Akhmetov due to unsuccessful agricultural reforms. Since 2008, he has held the position of mayor of Astana. His political career has been marked by significant roles within the government.
