Ilse Focke was an Austrian Romanist born on February 4, 1909, in Salzburg. From a Sudeten German Protestant family that adhered to Nazi ideology, she notably aided her Jewish friend Emanuel 'Manek' Willner in evading Nazi persecution from 1938 to 1945. Focke risked her life by hiding him in her apartment in Zagreb for four years. In recognition of her bravery, she was posthumously honored as Righteous Among the Nations by Yad Vashem in 2020. She passed away on July 4, 1976, in Innsbruck.
