He gained fame for his studies in comparative anatomy and research on reptiles, particularly focusing on their color patterns and nerve supply. Whimster participated in the medical team that entered the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp post-liberation in 1945. He made significant contributions to dermatology, defining keratoacanthoma and distinguishing between pemphigus and pemphigoid, and contributed to the understanding of melanocytes and malignant melanoma. His life was tragically cut short by a road traffic accident at age 55.
