Hugh Travers Tracey was a British ethnomusicologist born on January 29, 1903, in Willand, Devon, and died on October 23, 1977, in Krugersdorp. Together with his wife, Peggy, he collected and archived music from Southern and Central Africa. Throughout the years from 1929 into the 1970s, Tracey made over 35,000 field recordings of traditional African music. He also derived and popularized the Kalimba from the traditional Mbira instrument.
