Hristo Prodanov was a Bulgarian mountaineer and engineer, notable for being the first Bulgarian to summit an 8000-meter peak, Lhotse (8516 m) in 1981, and the first to reach Everest (8848 m) in 1984. He tragically died on April 22 while descending back to base camp. Prodanov was the 155th climber to summit Everest, the 13th to do so without supplemental oxygen, and the first to ascend via the West Ridge without oxygen, achieving this during particularly tough conditions in April.
