Horst Degen was a German naval officer and submarine commander during World War II, notable for commanding U-701 in the North Atlantic, where he sank eleven ships, including four warships. He was the most successful commander of German U-boats in US waters, with a total tonnage of 27,056 gross tons. His submarine was sunk by a US aircraft on July 7, 1942. Degen survived for two days in the sea before being rescued, ultimately becoming a US prisoner of war. After the war, he worked in the wine and spirits trade and later in the automobile business.
