He graduated with a degree in Russian from the Aleksander Pushkin Institute in Moscow in 1983 and became a teacher in 1986. He has a strong interest in theology, writing several articles on the topic, and published a book titled Prestar og profetar in 1994. He gained recognition in 1987 with his first novel, Tað heita summarið, which is notable for its setting in Vietnam and its erotic themes.
