Marie-Jean-Baptiste-Hippolyte Berlier was a Roman Catholic theologian and the first bishop of the newly established Diocese of Niamey. Born in Pélussin on March 10, 1919, he joined the Redemptorists in 1932, served in the French Resistance during WWII, and was ordained a priest in 1946. In the 1950s, he was a school director before becoming bishop in 1961. Berlier participated in all four sessions of the Second Vatican Council and retired in 1984 to live with the Tuareg people. He passed away on September 22, 1992, and is buried in Niamey.
