Hettie Smit, the pseudonym of Mrs. S.J. van Vuuren (1908–1973), was a notable Afrikaans writer known for her novel 'Sy kom met die sekelmaan' (1937). This work, structured in diary and letter form, is recognized as the first confession novel in Afrikaans. Based on the correspondence between Smit and writer WEG Louw, it has seen over ten reprints and was later adapted for performance in 2001. Smit was educated at the University of Cape Town, where she earned M.A. and B.Educ. degrees and worked as a teacher and translator.
