Herschel Clay Baker was an American professor of English literature known for his expertise in Christian humanism and its decline. Born on November 8, 1914, in Texas, he completed his Ph.D. at Harvard in 1939. Baker taught at the University of Texas before joining Harvard in 1946, where he chaired the English Department. His notable works include 'The Dignity of Man' (1947) and a 1952 book on the decay of Christian humanism. He was a Guggenheim Fellow and received an Honorary Doctorate from Southern Methodist University in 1966. He passed away on February 2, 1990.
