Hermann Lorenz (August 2, 1928 - 2001) was an officer in the Ministry of Interior of the GDR and its last executioner. He operated mainly at the Leipzig prison, where he conducted the last 20 executions on German soil between 1969 and 1981, primarily for murder. His last two executions were in 1980 and 1981. Lorenz was known for his meticulous and punctual nature as a department head. He retired due to health reasons in 1980 but briefly returned for one last execution. The death penalty was abolished in the GDR in 1987.
