He began his career with Donald Byrd and later joined the Miles Davis Quintet, contributing to redefining jazz rhythm and becoming a key figure in post-bop sound. In the 1970s, Hancock experimented with jazz fusion, funk, and electro-funk styles. His well-known compositions include "Cantaloupe Island," "Watermelon Man," "Maiden Voyage," and "Chameleon," alongside hit singles like "I Thought It Was You" and "Rockit." He teaches at UCLA and chairs the Herbie Hancock Institute of Jazz.
