Born in Lisbon to American parents, he graduated with a Ph.D. in physical chemistry from Duke University in 1939. His early career included work at Johns Hopkins Medical School and the Naval Research Laboratory during WWII. Pohl contributed significantly to the field of polymer physics and published extensively, including the first article on dielectroforesis in 1951. He held teaching positions at various universities and served on editorial boards for prominent scientific journals.
