He was born in Saskatchewan, Canada, and received his education at the University of Saskatchewan and the University of California, Berkeley. Taube taught at several prestigious universities, including Cornell, Chicago, and Stanford. He authored over 600 works, supervised more than 200 graduate students, and received multiple honors, including the Priestley Medal in 1985. He had three children, including anthropologist Karl Taube.
