Townes received his bachelor's degrees from Furman College and earned a doctorate from Cornell University. He taught at various universities and collaborated with his wife on extensive Hymenoptera studies, which contributed to a large collection of specimens. He published several revisions and catalogues on Ichneumonidae and established the American Entomological Institute. Townes passed away on May 2, 1990.
