Henk Tjon, full name Henk Tjon Tam Pau, was a Surinamese playwright and theatre director born on August 25, 1948. He studied directing in the Netherlands and became involved with the Haagse Comedie. In the late 1960s, he and Thea Doelwijt organized the cabaret show 'Land te koop'. Returning to Suriname in 1970, he co-founded the Doeth Theater and was known for his nationalistic and socially critical works. Tjon was also a key organizer of Carifesta, the largest Caribbean arts festival.
