Hélé Béji is a Tunisian writer born in 1948 in Tunis. She is the daughter of Tunisian politician Mohsen Ben Ammar. After successfully passing the competitive exam in contemporary literature, she joined the University of Tunis to teach literature. Béji later worked for UNESCO in Paris and established the International Institute of Tunisia in 1998. She has expressed a strong admiration for writer Marcel Proust, whose influence is evident in her stories. In 1983, she received the Prix de l'Afrique méditerranéenne, awarded by the Association of French Language Writers.
