John Hartzell Spence was an American writer and the founding editor of Yank, the Army Weekly, a military magazine during World War II. He is known for coining the term 'pinup'. Spence studied journalism at the University of Iowa, graduated in 1930, and began his career with the United Press. After the war, he wrote several works including the memoir 'One Foot in Heaven', turned into a film, and 'Vain Shadow', a biography of conquistador Francisco de Orellana. He lived on his farm in Virginia and wrote about his farming experiences.
