Harold Elliot Varmus is an American scientist born on December 18, 1939, who won the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1989, shared with John Michael Bishop, for their discovery of the cellular origin of retroviral oncogenes. He was appointed by President Barack Obama as the director of the National Cancer Institute and also served as co-chair of the President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology.
