Hannu Erik Waarala (March 3, 1954 – May 2013) was a cultural critic from Jyväskylä, Finland. He published numerous critiques in various newspapers and was known as a well-read and educated journalist. Waarala held a degree in humanities and was also involved in theatrical life, dramatizing works for performance, including August Strindberg's 'Madman's Defence' in 1990 and Fyodor Dostoevsky's 'The Landlord’s Night Guests' for the Yövieraat theatre group in 1992. He demanded high artistic standards in theatre and criticized its commercialization.
