Hannelore Schmatz was a German mountaineer born on February 16, 1940. She tragically died on October 2, 1979, at an altitude of 8,300 meters after a successful ascent of Mount Everest via the southern route. Schmatz became the first woman and the first German citizen to die on the slopes of Everest. She was part of an expedition led by her husband, Gerhard Schmatz, and her body remained frozen on the mountain for years, often seen by climbers until it was ultimately blown away by the wind.
