Gwydion Brooke (1912–2005) was Britain’s principal bassoonist with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, recognized as a member of its elite wind players. Originally named Frederick James Gwydion Holbrooke and son of composer Joseph Holbrooke, he joined the Philharmonia Orchestra after Sir Thomas Beecham's death and stayed until 1979. Brooke premiered Elizabeth Maconchy's Concertino for Bassoon & String Orchestra and was lauded by peers, with Thea King calling him the finest bassoonist she ever knew.
