Guion Stewart Bluford Jr. is an American aerospace engineer, retired U.S. Air Force officer, fighter pilot, and former NASA astronaut, born on November 22, 1942. He is notable for being the first African American in space and the second person of African descent to travel to space. Before his NASA career, he served as a U.S. Air Force officer, eventually attaining the rank of Colonel. Bluford participated in Space Shuttle missions from 1983 to 1992, and he was part of the STS-8 mission aboard Challenger, marking a significant milestone in space exploration.
