She grew up in Kirke Såby and graduated from Roskilde Katedralskole in 1943. Initially aiming to become an archaeologist, she joined the literary circle of Viggo F. Møller and made her debut in 1943, befriending Tove Ditlevsen and Halfdan Rasmussen. She had two marriages, first with Johannes Bülow Joensen and later with civil engineer Jørgen Foss Brink.
