He is best remembered for his portrayal of Atticus Finch in 'To Kill a Mockingbird' (1962), for which he won the Academy Award for Best Actor. In recognition of his humanitarian work, President Lyndon B. Johnson awarded him the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1969. In 1999, the American Film Institute ranked him as the 12th greatest star of all time.
