The first-generation Tsuyuno Gorobee (1643? - June 22, 1703) started as a lay Buddhist priest before creating the artform of Tsujibanashi. Teaching and performing in regions like Kyoto, he became a significant cultural figure. The second-generation Tsuyuno Gorobee (1932 - 2009), born Ichirō Akitagawa, was a well-respected Rakugo performer and served as the chairman of the Kamigata Rakugo Association.
