Görel Östberg is a Swedish physician and pathologist born on November 29, 1932, in Lund. She is the daughter of Doctor Otto Östberg and Monica Löwegren. Östberg studied at Lund University, obtaining her medical license in 1962, and later her doctorate and docent in pathology in 1973. She worked as an assistant, teacher, and researcher at the Pathological Institute of Malmö General Hospital from 1958 to 1975 before becoming a senior physician and head of the pathology department at Halmstad County Hospital.
