She is recognized for being the first gay woman of color and military veteran to run for office in Texas. Jones campaigned for Texas's 23rd congressional district in 2018 and 2020 but was defeated both times. Raised by a single mother, she holds multiple degrees, including in East Asian studies and economics, and has a notable career in military intelligence.
