He made history as the first Latin American artist to have a solo exhibition at the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, Russia, in 1971. Notably, he was the first Bolivian painter whose artwork was auctioned at Christie's and Sotheby's. In recognition of his contributions to the arts, he was honored in 2014 with the prestigious Order of the Condor of the Andes, awarded by the State of Bolivia.
