Gherman Titov was a Soviet cosmonaut who became the second human to orbit Earth aboard Vostok 2 on August 6, 1961. He was the first person to complete multiple orbits, totaling 17, and the first to spend more than a day in space. Titov also distinguished himself as the first individual to sleep in space and experience space sickness. After Yuri Gagarin's death in 1968, Titov's career in test piloting ended. He served as a Soviet Air Force colonel and later became a communist politician in post-Soviet Russia, advocating for regular celebrations of cosmonaut day.
